Barbara Jordan Scholarship at UT Arlington
Barbara Jordan, the first woman elected to the Texas Senate and the first African-American elected to represent Texas in the U.S. House of Representatives, eloquently expressed these values in her 1976 keynote speech at the Democratic National Convention:
"We believe that the government which represents the authority of all the people, not just one interest group, but all the people, has an obligation to actively — underscore actively — seek to remove those obstacles which would block individual achievement — obstacles emanating from race, sex, economic condition. The government must remove them."
This $1,000 annual scholarship is designed to benefit students who will work to remove those obstacles.
“Your encouragement of these bright, promising individuals will make it possible for their talent and dedication to flourish, reach a wider audience and transform more lives,” said Dr. Beth Wright, dean of the UTA College of Liberal Arts. “Thank you so very much for your generosity and your support."
